Best Looking Playstation 2 (PS2) Games - What Took So Long?

Best Looking Playstation 2 (PS2) Games

The long and winding road. I remember the day I brought home my PS2 like it was yesterday. I was having the time of my life with my Dreamcast and was very excited to go to the “Next – Next Generation”. I spend a gazillion bucks on the system and got SSX, Sky Odyssey and Time Splitters with it. I also bought a very expensive Sony memory card (funny how long it takes for these things to come down) and a 3rd party DVD remote that sucked and ended up collecting dust.

After playing SSX for about 20 minutes and the other 2 craptastic games for 5 each I was very sad. On one hand I had a very nice, futuristic looking Dreamcast stand, but the price hurt.

This was the future of gaming? This is what I waited a year for? I booted up SeaMan and told him my sad story – he told me not to forget my rubbers.

Soon reports came out saying that the PS2 was a difficult system to program games for and that we’d see the full potential of the system… soon. I give the system some slack for being the most popular. It’s going to attract a slew of developers both good and bad. Let’s face it, for every good PS2 title there are like 50 giant heaps of dog crap that come out. Still not a bad library considering the amount of titles released thus far. But at $50.00 a pop to weed through the crap? Ouch! Double-edged sword.

Fast-forward to June 2005. The Sony PlayStation 3 has just been announced at E3. Dazzling presentation with the cast of Toy Story… er, I mean Killzone 2. All the fanboys are squeegeeing their eye toy lens’ getting prepped for the Final Fantasy CosPlay online MMOLFBDFWSL (Massive Multiplayer Online Fan Boy Droolfest With Severe Lag).

But wait… the games just started to look like we were promised so many years ago!!!!

Wussupwitdat???

In the past year we have seen some great looking – and great playing PS2 games come out. This is what I expected from Syk Odyssey and Time Splitters when I booted them up. It's hard to believe they are running on the same system! Why did it take so long? Will the Playstation 3 also deliver underwhelming performance for the first 4 years of it’s lifecycle? Let's hope Sony gets it right.

Here’s what I’m talking about:

God of War - Simply Stunning. THE Best game ever to come out for PS2. This could have been an XBox title. Beautiful.

Gran Turrismo 4 - Great looking game! Why couldn't GT3 look this good? I don't get it! Important note about this game - Sony promised that it would be online but sadly that never happened. Microsoft's XBox Forza Motorsport kicks it's ass just for the sheer fact that it offers an awesome online experience when Sony gave us a sucka-punch. Killzone in-game footage my ass! Bitch slap me once, shame on you. Bitch slap me twice shame on me! Sucka!

Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal - It's a scientific fact: games are just more fun to play when the objects in them don't all have buzz saw edges. This game kicks arse!

So, there you have it - my sad story. How a soldier became a slave and then became a gladiator and finally had some games worth getting excited about.

Now, if you'll excuse me - I've got a tank to warm up.
